this course aims to introduce the formation and development of tcm theory, philosophy and main thinking method of tcm, and theory and methods of tcm in analyzing and diagnosing diseases, including the theories of yin and yang, five elements, zangxiang (viscera and their manifestations), qi and blood, body fluid, and meridians and collaterals, as well as the etiology and pathogenesis of diseases, diagnostic methods, syndrome differentiation, principles in disease prevention and therapy.

this course aims to introduce the basic theory and knowledge in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry, including safety of chemicals, periodic table, chemical bonds, coordination chemistry, chemical kinetics, chemical thermodynamics, redox reaction, common chemical functional groups and its properties, biological redox reaction and elimination reaction, characterization of organic compound, and chemical database searching, etc.

this course aims to equip the students with the experimental expertise of thermodynamics, kinetics, organic reactions, synthesis and structural identification which are relevant to pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences and to illustrate basic organic and physical laboratory techniques.

this course aims to introduce the morphologic and anatomical knowledge of plant cells, plant tissues and plant organs (root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit and seed), botanical classification of algae, fungi, lichen, bryophyte, ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms, and characteristics of more than forty important families and related medicinal plants.

this course aims to equip the students with the experimental expertise of basic morphological and microscopic observation and anatomical techniques for medicinal plants, including morphologic and microscopic characteristics of plant cells, plant tissues and plant organs, algae, fungi, ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms, etc.

this course aims to introduce fundamental knowledge on human anatomy and physiology, including the location, structure and function of internal organs, skeletons and muscles, and the meaning of the terminology.

this course aims to introduce commonly-used instruments, apparatus, experimental operation techniques in anatomy and physiology, human organ morphology, observation of cells and tissues, preparation of histological specimens and buffer solutions, and lab report writing requirement and techniques by employing hand-on laboratory technique training, lab and video demonstration. students will acquire a basic understanding of anatomy & physiology laboratory techniques through this course.

this course aims to introduce the basic theory and knowledge in the history, production and collection, processing, nature, combination, contraindications, and dosage and usage of chinese material medica, and to introduce the source, nature and meridian entry, actions, indications, usage and dosage, and application cautions of about 300 kinds of chinese material medica selected from exterior-releasing medicinal, heat-clearing medicinal, purgative medicinal, wind-damp-dispelling medicinal, damp-resolving medicinal, damp-draining diuretic, interior-warming medicinal, qi-regulating medicinal, digestant medicinal, hemostatic medicinal, blood-activating and stasis-resolving medicinal, phlegm-resolving medicinal, antitussive and antiasthmatic medicinal, tranquilizing medicinal, live-pacifying wind-extinguishing medicinal, resuscitative medicinal, and tonifying medicinal, etc.

this course aims to introduce the basic theory and knowledge of biochemical and molecular processes in living organisms, including the structures and functions of cellular components such as proteins, amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules, and the organization of eukaryotic genes, the flow of genetic information, the control of gene expression, and the recombinant dna technology, as well as how these biomolecules participate in our life and human diseases.

this course aims to introduce commonly-used instruments and experimental operation techniques in biochemistry and molecular biology. students will acquire basic laboratory techniques on purification of genomic dna, preparation of bacterial competent cells, purification of plasmid dna, application of restriction enzymes, cloning and pcr gene amplification by employing the hand-on laboratory technique training and video demonstration.

this course aim to introduce the basic theory and knowledge in the formation principles and variation forms of chinese medicinal formula, the relationship between formula and therapeutic principles, classification of prescription, dosage form, preparation and administrative methods, and to introduce the composition, direction, actions, clinical application, combination, and variants of 208 commonly-used formulae selected from 18 categories of formulae, i.e. exterior-releasing formula, purgative formula, harmonizing and releasing formula, heat-clearing formula, cold-dispelling formula, tonifying and replenishing formula, securing and astringent formula, tranquillizing formula, orifice-opening formula, blood-regulating formula, qi-regulating formula, wind-dispelling formula, dryness-treating formula, dampness-dispelling formula, phlegm-dispelling formula, digestant formula, worm-expelling formula, and emetic formula.

this course aims to introduce the concept, chemical structure, physico-chemical properties, biosynthesis, extraction, isolation, analysis, and structural elucidation of different types of active principles in chinese medicines.

this course aims to equip the students with the experimental expertise of extraction, isolation, analysis, and identification of active principles from chinese medicines.

  

bp12301 immunology & microbiology (3 credits)

this course aims to introduce the basic theory and knowledge of immune system and microbiology, and some of the diseases caused by dysfunction of this system, including the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases and related immunological regulation, the basic principles and concepts of medical microbiology, the various classes of microorganisms that interact with humans, diseases caused by multicellular parasites, helminthes and flukes.

the course aims to introduce basic theory and methods of pharmacology and toxicology, principles and concept of drug actions, scientific basis for the therapeutic uses of drugs, difference between orthodox drugs and chinese medicines, beneficial and harmful interactions between chinese medicines and orthodox drugs.

this course aims to introduce the concept, characteristics, basic pharmaceutical theory, preparation and quality standards, rational use of basic dosage forms of chinese medicines, the type, nature, feature, and application of commonly used auxiliary material of chinese medicinal dosage forms, and the commonly-used equipment and unit operations, and new dosage forms and technologies.

this course aims to equip the students with the experimental expertise of preparation and quality control of various dosages forms of chinese medicines, including commonly used traditional dosages forms, such as solution, injection, ointment, tablets, capsule, pills, and suppository, and modern dosage forms, such as microcapsule and liposome, as well as quality control, stability testing sand dissolution test.

this course aims to introduce the knowledge of analysis methods and techniques of chinese medicines, including the general principles for chinese medicines analysis, procedure for the analysis, various techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis of chinese medicines, such as lc-uv, lc-ms, gc-ms etc, as well as aspects of quality assurance for chinese medicines and related general inspections.

this course aims to equip the students with the experimental expertise of analysis of chinese medicines, including the principles of analysis method, instruments, basic operational techniques, application, advantages and limitations of the analytical methods.

this course aims to introduce the concept, characteristics, pattern, influencing factor, regulation methods of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs, dosage forms and drug delivery systems in physiological milieu and their implications for pharmaceutical care. this course will teach pharmacokinetic concepts, parameters, compartmental models and methods to calculate pharmacokinetics parameters.

  

bp12404 management of pharmaceutical affairs (2 credits)

this course aims to introduce the basic concepts in the management of pharmaceutical affairs, the legislation of drug administration in macau and the mainland of china, the international drug administration policies, the management of drug registration, identifiers, advertisement, and distribution, the management of pharmacist, pharmacy, pharmaceutical products and chinese medicine in macau, and pharmaceutical industry in macau, so as to teach students to analyze and distinguish various pharmaceutical affairs.

  

bp19301 internship of chinese medicines (12 credits)

this course aims to train the students, under supervision, to review and practice the knowledge obtained from the precious three years’ study and establish professional skills for future work, including medicinal botany, authentication of chinese material medica, unique processing of chinese material medica, pharmaceutics of chinese medicines, quality analysis and control of pharmaceutics of chinese medicines, etc. the practicum will be conducted in the formats of hand on work and site visit in the summer time of the third year of study at botanical garden, pharmaceutical company, hospital and clinics of chinese medicines, and other institutions of chinese medicines.

  

bp12405 honours project (15 credits)

the final year student will carry out research on certain topic under the supervision of teaching staff, during which the student will conduct literature searching and reviewing, lab procedure design, experimental operation, data analysis and interpretation, and summarization of the result. at the end of the projects, the students are required to give an oral presentation and submit thesis on the research topic. this course will solidify the theoretical knowledge the students learned in the previous stage and train student to do research independently.

this course aims to introduce the basic knowledge on the resources of chinese medicinal materials, including general concept and theories of chinese medicinal materials resources, category and natural distribution of chinese medicinal materials in china, geo-herbal resources and knowledge of good agriculture practice (gap), approaches on the scientific exploration and sustainable utilization of resources of chinese medicinal materials.

this course aims to introduce the basic theory and knowledge of commercial name, production area, collection and habitat processing, commercial characteristics, main chemical constituents, identification and testing, quality requirements, and packaging and storage of chinese medicines and related regulations.

this course aims to introduce the basic knowledge, technical requirements, and major procedures of the research and development of new products from chinese medicines, including product selection, formulation, processing, pilot manufacturing, quality control standard, stability testing, pharmacodynamics and mechanism study, safety evaluation, clinical trials, product registration, status and trend of medicinal industry, data analysis, and intellectual property rights protections, etc.
