the 10th lecture “6g release: the future of connectivity through ai and machine learning”, part of the science and technology masters hosted by macau university of science and technology, was successfully held in the block d auditorium on the afternoon of wednesday, november 27, 2024. the lecture was given by dr. khaled b. letaief, professor of engineering and professor of electronics and computer engineering at the hong kong university of science and technology. joseph hun-wei lee, president of macau university of science and technology, presented a souvenir and letter of appointment to dr. letaief.

at the beginning of the lecture, dr. khaled b. letaief discussed the use of artificial intelligence (ai) in our daily lives and shared several famous quotes to highlight its importance. he then referenced allen’s interpretation of artificial intelligence and introduced the first ai seminar. dr. letaief explained artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning, with a focus on the branch of machine learning. he categorized machine learning into three types and explained the ‘decision tree’, one of the most widely used and practical methods in machine learning, demonstrating its various applications and functions to the students.

dr. khaled b. letaief began the second part of the lecture by discussing the growing adoption of ai. in the third part, he explored ai applications in medical treatment and transportation. he then highlighted four challenges and key obstacles facing modern ai. dr. letaief also introduced generative ai, emphasizing its explosive potential. building on this, he discussed the key topic of 6g, explaining its necessity by pointing out the shortcomings and areas for improvement in 5g.
